What tea is best for health during Lichun?
Start of Spring (Lichun), the first solar term of the year, marks the beginning of spring. The character "立" (li) means "start," signifying that Lichun ushers in the prelude to spring and the awakening of all living things. However, this warm, breezy season also brings hidden health risks. As the folk saying goes, "When a hundred plants sprout, a hundred ailments emerge." This reminds us that adapting to seasonal changes and practicing scientific health preservation during spring can positively impact one’s well-being for the entire year.
Specifically, the key to health during Lichun lies in the concept of "生" (sheng, "generation" or "growth"). Lichun marks the starting point for the upward surge of Yang Qi (vital energy) in the human body. Since humans are deeply interconnected with nature, nurturing Yang Qi and facilitating its smooth ascent to align with the body’s natural rhythms becomes the focal point of health cultivation.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the Five Elements theory, spring symbolizes renewal, vitality, and flourishing growth—qualities associated with the Wood element and the liver. The liver governs free-flowing Qi, corresponds to the emotion of anger, and thrives on harmony while resenting stagnation. Thus, nourishing the liver is central to spring health practices. Avoid rage and melancholy; cultivate optimism and inner peace to allow liver Qi to flourish, achieving the goal of liver nourishment and protection.
